Creating Products and Categories In Magento

Follow

The place to start when creating products is ensuring that your category for the product is already set up and if not, setting it up

CATEGORIES

On you Magento Admin panel to get to the categories section you need to rollover "catalog" on the top navigation bar and then click "manage categories"  on the list that will appear below.

You can see all of your current categories by expanding the file tree view on the left hand side.

If you need to create a new category you can do so by selecting the category you want this to be below (for example if you have a main category for "Personalised clothing" and want to add a section below this for "Personalised T-Shirts" you would select "Personalised clothing") and selecting the button "Add Subcategory".

This will bring up a new input screen where the details of this category will need to be entered.

     1) Name - This is the name as it will appear in both the File Tree on this page and also on the website so is very important to be kept short and to the point.

     2) Is Active - If you want this category to show on the website you would need to make sure this is set to "YES"

     3) URL KEY - Is a nice one to fill in as it will help with SEO, this field will set the pages URL (i.e. www.yourpage.com/thissection). By default this will be set as the same as the Name field already filled in but can be written to better suit what may be searched in a search engine.

     4) Page Title - This dictates what text is shown on the top bar of the browser when you page is loaded, this is also a good tool for SEO

     5) Meta Description - This field will be the short description about this page that is shown underneath the link on google and other search engines. This field is also another good one to fill in for SEO as it helps search engines know exactly whats on your pages.

Once all of these fields are filled in you can press the "Save Category" Button which is in the yellow bar in the top right corner of your screen and your category will not show in the file tree and also on your website and you are ready to add some products to it.

Once in the file tree you can click and drag your category if you want to change its order or put it under another sub category.

**NOTE** - If your products are already created and you want to set many products to your new category you can at this stage click on your category in the file tree on magento and at the top just below your category name are various tabs, if you select "Category Products" you can search and add multiple products here.

PRODUCTS

Now that your categories are set up your products have somewhere to go.

Back on the Magento Admin Panel you need to again rollover "Catalog" on the top navigation bar and select "Manage Products" in the list which drops down.

This will bring up the full list of all of your currently entered products with the functionality to search through should you with to find a specific item.

At this stage to create a new product you can select the button " + Add Product " in the top right corner of the screen, a new page will now open with 2 fields to set.

1) Attribute Set - set as "Default"

2) Product Type - set as "Simple Product"

Then click continue to move on to the next screen. This will bring you to the screen where you can start entering your specific product information.

On this page you will be taking the tabs in grey starting with General one by one.

General Tab

This tab contains all the basic information about your product

1) Name - This is the name of your product as it will appear on your website

2) Description - This is where you can write any information you want the customer to see about your product

3) SKU - This will be your unique identifier for the product (i.e. your product number)

4) Weight - This is the weight of the product and is useful because this will allow you to later set complex carriage calculations

5) Status - Make sure this is set to "Enabled" or the product will not appear online

6) URL Key - As before is a nice one to fill in as it will help with SEO, this field will set the pages URL (i.e. www.yourpage.com/thissection). By default this will be set as the same as the Name field already filled in but can be written to better suit what may be searched in a search engine.

7) Visibility - This field controls how the product shows up on your website, Catalog Only, Catalog and Search, Search Only or not visible individually on products which should only be seen as part of a group of products. For most of your products you will want "Catalog, Search".

8) Country of Manufacture - This is an optional entry field which can be filled in if known

To finalize your information click "Save" which is an orange button in the top right hand corner.

Price Tab

The next tab in your list of interest is the price tab which will set the price of your product on the website

1) Price - This is the price as will be shown on your website, this will be linked with tax class at the bottom of the list. Generally speaking Personalised gifts can be priced including VAT and tax class set to none as retail customers on the whole prefer to see a price including VAT, for promotional products people tend to prefer to see the price excluding VAT which can be done by setting the tax class to "Taxable Goods" and in the price field entering the price excluding VAT, The checkout will still add the VAT at the end.

2) Special Price - This is where you can set any promotional prices if you want to but your product on offer and reduce the price, if this is a limited time reduction you  can set the "Special Price From Date" and the "Special Price To Date" to restrict when your offer will be run.

To finalize your information click "Save" which is an orange button in the top right hand corner.

Images Tab

The images tab, as the name suggests is where you will be able to upload images to Magento for use with your product in the product catalog. To upload images you can select the "browse files..." button which is orange on the right side of the screen. This will open a file manager in which you need to find your image which is related to the product and continue. Your image will now appear on screen by name and size with a button next to it to remove if needed. This image is not yet available on magento and to put it live you need to select "Upload Files" which is next to the "browse files..." button, When this is done your image will now be in the table and you should be able to rollover it for a preview. Under most circumstances you will just use the one image and select all of the options for this being "Base Image", "Small Image" and "Thumbnail".

To finalize your information click "Save" which is an orange button in the top right hand corner.

BnetCentric SupplierLink

This section of the product set up identifies which product from the supplier has been purchased and also your company details so that they know where the order has come from.

1) Supplier SKU - This is the suppliers product number for this item

2) Company ID - This is your company ID which is required so the supplier knows the order has come from you.

To finalize your information click "Save" which is an orange button in the top right hand corner.

Gateway3D EasyCreate3D

This section points the website to your 3D product for customization so is very important.

For this section you need to have Easypromo3D open and logged in. You need to locate your 3D model, this can be done by selecting "Products" from the "My EP3D" list on the left side and searching by its name or ID, once you have found the product required click on the "Edit" icon on the right hand side of it. This will take you into the product and here in the center of the screen you will have 5 drop down tabs - Basic Details for "-", Model & Texture, Links, Output Variable and Print Test. You need to expand the section titled "Links"

In this section there are 3 links to your 3D model and a number of options below these. A few of these options you will need to be aware of-

1) Default Tab, LMO (Left Menu Order) and RMO (Right Menu Order) - LMO and RMO set the order that tabs will show on the 3D model, these do not have to be set but can be set if a specific structure is preferred. Default Tab will set which Tab will be the one to open up on loading the model. These re set by a number and are as follows -

     2 = Gallery

     3 = Text

     4 = Options

     5 = Help

     6 = Tools

     7 = Colours

     9 = Products

In the checkbox options the following should be considered -

1) Auto Rotate - If this is checked then when the 3D model loads it will set the product to rotate at a slow speed

2) Hide Controls - This will hide the controls for zooming, rotating and camera views if they are not required

3) a2c Colour - This means "Add to Cart Colour" this sets the colour of the add to cart button if you would like a specific colour, by default this will be orange.

4) a2c Image - This means "Add to Cart Image", if you have had a customer button made for your add to cart option you can add it here, if not it can be left blank.

Once you have set all of the options you require select all of the link inside the grey box below "Template Viewer" then right click it and select copy.

After this you need to go back to your Magento Admin panel where you left it (Logged in, On your product and in the "Gateway3D EasyCreate3D" tab. In the field called "Easypromo3D URL" right click the entry field and select paste to paste over the link from Easypromo3D.

Next you will need to fill in the Supplier field with details of who supplies the product.

To finalize your information click "Save" which is an orange button in the top right hand corner.

Custom Options Tab

The next magento tab to address is the Custom Options, this tab tells magento which bits of information it needs to take from the 3D model once the customer has finished their design.

To be able to fill in these sections you will need to also have easypromo3D open again - instructions repeated below

For this section you need to have Easypromo3D open and logged in. You need to locate your 3D model, this can be done by selecting "Products" from the "My EP3D" list on the left side and searching by its name or ID, once you have found the product required click on the "Edit" icon on the right hand side of it. This will take you into the product and here in the center of the screen you will have 5 drop down tabs - Basic Details for "-", Model & Texture, Links, Output Variable and Print Test

At this point if you expand the section "Output Variables" and click the orange button on the right hand side for "Add New Option"

This will open up some new input fields to be filled in. The information you need for this section if from the EasyPromo3D page, the information you see will be similar to the following

Thumbnail URL = thumburl
Job ID = printJobId
Bundled = bundled
Printing URL = printurl
Custom Colour 1001378 = userColour1001378
Custom Image 21279 = userImage21279
Custom Text 73410 = userText73410
Custom Text 73410 Justification = userText73410_justification
Custom Text 73410 Font = userText73410_font
Custom Text 73410 Colour = userText73410_colour

This can be split and done one at a time, take the first one Thumbnail URL = thumburl

This can be entered into the fields as follows

**NOTE - Input Type is always text - Field

Untitled.jpg

The following sections always need to be added as a custom option

- Thumbnail URL

- Job ID

- Printing URL

The other ones added will be dependent on what custom options have been made on the product

- If the customer has added text - "Custom Text" would need to be an option

- If the customer has added text colour - "Custom Text Colour" would need to be an option

- If the customer has added Font Justification  - "Custom Text Justification" would need to be an option

- If the customer has added an Image- "Custom Image" would need to be an option

- If the customer has added a colour - "Custom Colour" would need to be an option

So using the Output variables shown above and using User Text as an example, that would be entered as follows

Untitled1.png

Once you have completed all of your necessary custom options your product is done and ready to be purchased.
